Flea market finds

Indigo Wall Decor

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Oh the  challenges of decorating a large wall!  Well, if  you do not have large artwork—-consider grouping like sized accessories and wall art to create your own personal style in a big way!   This is my family room cathedral wall and believe it or not— the artwork is original (made by me!)  To create this vignette,  I gathered flea market finds and thrift store frames for a casual look.  Each frame was painted black and the photo mats were painted white (yes you can paint the mats!)   This gave me the ultimate opportunity to finally frame some vintage fabrics I found at a yard sale in New Hampshire years ago.  The road sign has sentimental value to me as it was one of the original signs in the neighborhood where I grew up.

The vase was a great steal at $2.00 from a church flea market and the two white bowls I found when I was featured on HGTV’s Longest Yard Sale a few years ago (another steal deal).  And the cow creamer was given to me over 20 years ago from one of my best friends.   What I like best about this decorating idea is that I got to go on a treasure hunt in my own home PLUS  it didn’t cost a fortune!

Halloween in Ghoulish Green

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

It’s that time of year when the Ghouls and Ghosts start to come out for Halloween.   Here’s a great idea from Krylon Spray paint using classic black and lime green to decorate your Halloween party tables!  And it’s so simple to recycle odds and ends around the house.   Find an  old frame, birdhouse, teapot, candle sticks, margarita glass and other odds and ends and revamp them with some fresh paint!

A little dry ice will also set the scene.  Here’s the recycled Margareta glasses made to look like a compote.  I think the crow is really intrigued don’t you?  LOL.

Coloring Outside the Lines!

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

I’m having so much fun as part of the Faber-Castel Design Memory Craft Mix & Match design team! Over the next few months I’ll be posting fun and easy projects using their fabulous art products! This week I decided to color outside of the lines and here’s how I did it.

Supply list:
Mixed Media Aquarelles & Ink –Green
Mixed Media Aquarelles & Ink- Black
Pitt® Artist Pen-Warm Grey V274
Stampers’s Big Brush Pen–Black
Pitt® Pastel-1121-280
Glue dots or decoupage medium
White scrapbook paper

Step 1. Sketch a bird onto white paper using the Pitt Pastel pen. Apply black Indian ink onto the flower stamp and randomly stamp onto bird. Using the green Indian ink, stamp entire bird. P.S. it’s okay to stamp outside the lines!

Step 2. Using Pitt® Art GRIP® pencils in green and yellow tones, randomly color inside the bird sketch. It’s easy to “Mix & Match” the colors because Faber-Castell has done all the color work. Using the brush inside the kit, dip in water and apply over the penciled colors you just applied. Allow to dry.

Step 3. Cut out the bird shape and grunge it up using the Pitt® Pastel pencils. Secure to any surface—I chose to use a vintage watering can!

My Favorite Flea Market Finds

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

amI love a treasure hunt and just wanted to share some of my favorite flea market finds.  The little chair is from around late 1800′s or early 1900′s and one of my fav’s.  The cake stand was about a $1.00, the pitcher about $2.00 (which has a matching flower pot not shown), the plates are a collection from various garage sales, the wooden stair rail that will eventually be used as a candle holder….. and the flower vase was a cha-ching moment!

It’s Time to Detox my Kitchen with a Little bit of Paint (or something)

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Looking out my big  back porch has me thinking I need to add a little bit of pattern and yellow into my kitchen eating area!

Looking from my porch to the inside you’ll  my long English pine table–an awesome antique/flea market find I bought for about $150 –years ago.   So with a little color inspiration from the outside—me thinks  it’s time for a little kitchen detox with some new paint (or something!)….stay tuned!

Wine Glass Charms

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

We’ve all seen them in the department stores…but here’s an elegant spin on wine glass charms!  To add some “charm” to this glass—I dug through my glass beads and other embellishments.  And instead of attaching it to the base of the glass–I opted to secure it near the top!  I hope you like this as much as I do!

DIY Rug Makeover

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Give me a paint brush and something to paint on and I’m a happy designer.  Here’s an after shot of a plain white rug I purchased at a garage sale for $2.00. (see before below)

This project was so simple using an inexpensive stencil, acrylic paint and acrylic sealer.  The rug was a cotton rug so I washed and bleached it prior to painting it.  After tapping off the boarders, I stenciled the motif using a stippling method of stenciling….all that means is that I pounced the brush to create the pattern.

I wanted a distressed look so rather than applying heavy amounts of paint while stippling, I varied the amount of paint on the brush to give it a “well loved” look.

Once I had the stencil motif applied, I then painted the boarder and removed the tape!

Taa-dah!   Much better than the before don’t you think!

Wedding Bliss—Simple but Memorable

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Simple but memorable—that’s the whole idea behind any event especially weddings!   So to put a “simple” spin on displaying various vignettes for an upcoming wedding, I thought it would be fun to have each guest send ”messages”  and well wishes in a bottle to the bride and groom.    I used vintage bottles, brown paper, some twine and Duetica’s Floot font to give the look of handwritten.

BTW:  My handwriting isn’t the greatest so this a great way to get your message across with Duetica’s fonts.

Although there will be many other vignettes, this one is the drink station.  Keeping with the theme of brown paper and simple styling,  this area creatively invites guests to “Pour Your Heart Out” and makes for  a fun way to say cheers.

Be sure to check out all my other design team members to see what they came up with using this simple font system!

Diary of a Designer: EASY Thanksgiving Table Decor

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Here’s a very simple and colorful tablescape I concocted for our  Thanksgiving Day celebration.

I used thrift store dinnerware finds and nestled them onto scattered silk leaves that come in a bag from the craft store!

It doesn’t get any easier or cheaper than that!

Wishing you much love and inspiration this holiday season.
